This work is inspired by the historic wharf piles that remain standing at places in the Whanganui River. These are longstanding traces of the River's maritime history and the importance of the it to Whanganui City. The three poles reflect the Whanganui River Hapū of Tamaupoko, Hinengākau and Tupoho, located in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Whanganui River. The blue poles, with blue lights at night, signal the entranceway from a distance guiding the traveller home and marking the point of departure when leaving.
