About

Explore the art galleries, museums, and open studios of Taranaki, Whanganui and Manawatū. The Coastal Arts Trail follows a pulse of creativity running through these three regions, and gives you insight into the lives and inspirations of the artists and creatives living here.

The scenic journey will guide you not only to art galleries and museums, but also to off-the-beaten-track studios and creative rural communities. Discover unique galleries, learn traditional skills at a wide range of workshops and experience the ahurea tuakiri (cultural identities) of these regions.

Art is at the heart of our communities, elevating cultural expression and lending vibrancy to life along the lower West Coast of the North Island. The Coastal Arts Trail takes in a broad range of classical and Māori art. You can enjoy sculpture, postmodern and street art, and experience first-hand the works of internationally renowned local artists. Browse the galleries to explore new places and immerse yourself in a creative, colourful world. Whether you have five days or just five hours, hit the road on an art-finding odyssey. From contemporary crafts in Whanganui, to seafront sculptures in Taranaki and fine arts in Manawatū, each region has so much to offer.

The Coastal Arts Trail is a nationally recognised and funded partnership between three regions on New Zealand’s North Island; Taranaki, Whanganui and Manawatū. These three regions share a depth of artistic and cultural assets and this project recognises the importance of kotahitanga - working together towards common goals- as we share this creative trail as a travel experience.

The Coastal Arts Trail was launched in early 2021 and is managed by Venture Taranaki, Whanganui & Partners and CEDA (Central Economic Development Agency).
