Helen Harvey is researching how to make enduring artworks without the use of any plastic supplies. Her studies have led her to look at the practices of The Old Masters as well as other ethnic and cultural groups from around the world. The works on display in her current Solo exhibition are all totally plastic free. The pigments have been derived from earths and they are fixed and made light fast by vegetable and mineral tannins and mordants. The surfaces of the stretched canvas works are sealed for easy care. Helen will discuss how she has achieved this plastic free materials list in her Artist Talk. The individual works have been inspired by local scenes around Ōpunakē as well as by her own handwoven textiles. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk sustainable, plastic free natural art making with a practicing artist. If you are concerned about the impact your art practice is having on the environment and even about it's end life this talk will inspire you.
