Mindspaces is a documentary narrated by our current Tylee Cottage resident, the acclaimed New Zealand sculptor and writer Denis O’Connor. He travels to Ireland, the UK and France to discuss, together with prominent art historians, archaeologists, curators and Gallery Directors, the studio spaces of Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon. The film was prompted by the untimely death of O’Connor’s daughter, the archaeologist Dr. Blaze O’Connor, who was part of the team that relocated the Francis Bacon studio from London to Dublin. Blaze and Denis had begun to discuss the sanctuary of ‘that room’ called a studio and how it functions as a mindspace for the artist. O’Connor also takes us into his Waiheke studio which he has occupied for over 50 years.
