Laura Shallcrass is an illustrator, author and artist who works from home in the hills near Queenstown, New Zealand. She lives with her husband and two children, along with an ever-growing zoo of furry friends.

Laura’s books:

Hare & Ruru is a story of Hare, who struggles with an un-named mental malady self described as ‘noise’. Whether runaway thoughts or loud feelings and general anxiety, Hare goes on a journey to try and find a solution. He ultimately helped by his calm and gentle friend, Ruru. Winner of the Russell Clark Award for Best Illustrated Book at the 2021 NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults and winner of the 2021 Storylines Notable Book Award.

What Colour is the Sky? is a beautifully illustrated picture book for young children exploring the wonder of nature and shows the importance of listening and respecting other opinions, even when everyone sees things differently.

Laura’s latest book Moonlight Mission is due for release in November. Kunekune knows something is up - food is going missing. Hare wants to mount a defense to protect the precious food that remains, but is that the right approach? Sometimes the answer lies right next to the problem, and this community learns the power of coming together.
