Introduced by Dr Billy van Uitregt, this presentation is centred on understanding and protecting the small population of Kūaka (Godwit) and their feeding habits in Whanganui. Our guests from China, represent an integral location on the flyway paths of the Kūaka.
The purpose of this visit is to build international research and teaching collaborations between communities and research institutions that are linked as key habitats of Kūaka across their global range from Aotearoa NZ, China, and Alaska USA. Dr Billy van Uitregt is a member of the Flyway University Alliance, representing Te Herenga Waka University of Wellington and working as part of a Whanganui-uri-based research collective to understand and protect the small population of Kūaka and their feeding habitats in Whanganui. Protection of the Whanganui Kūaka population requires strong diplomatic and research collaborations toward synergising migratory bird conservation efforts and policy across their global range. Our guests from across the range of the Kūaka will connect our Whanganui community with the behaviour and ecology of Kūaka (godwits) in their region, and the conservation efforts they each lead.
