The Canonization of Sister Josephine Bhakita - Sandy de Kock

Date & Time: 10:00 am August 5, 2025
- 3:00 pm August 23, 2025

Saint Josephine Margaret Bhakita was born in Darfur, Sudan in 1869.

She was trafficked into slavery at the age of 7, eventually sold to the Italian Consulate in Khartoum, Sudan. He returned to Italy with his family taking her with him, where she eventually joined the Canossian Sisterhood of the Catholic Church in Venice. She led a full and useful life and died in 1947.

She was canonized on October 1st 2000, Her Feast day is celebrated on February 8th, and she is the Patron Saint of Sudan, Slavery and Human Trafficking.

This body of work is my interpretation of her spirituality, and it highlights, for me, the incredible strength of African women.
