Weekend workshop with Anna Layzell – Intro to Oil and Cold Wax

Cold wax is a medium that can be added to (among other things) oil paint.  The effect in painting can be similar to encaustic without the need to use heat. Cold wax adds viscosity and translucence to oil paints and in this workshop we will explore techniques for using this medium.

We will experiment with exercises in additive and subtractive techniques, building layers and, textures using different materials from bubble wrap to corrugated card and collage. We will explore transfer methods or monoprinting as a way to add different marks and move marks about the surface. Our focus on working small will help you progress and feel confident to experiment and play with cold wax medium in a supportive environment and above all have fun.

Workshop details:

Dates: Saturday 22nd / Sunday 23rd February, 10am – 3pm (both days)

Location: Space Studio & Gallery, 18 Saint Hill Street – Upper Room (not wheelchair accessible)

Cost: $190 per person (core materials provided a list of optional supplies / tools will be supplied)

Hot drink service provided – BYO lunch and snacks or take a break at one of the amazing range of Whanganui eateries nearby the gallery.

About your tutor:

Anna Layzell is a printmaker who enjoys collograph printmaking and polyester plate lithography as well as other art forms. She reconnected with painting upon the discovery of the oil and cold wax medium and loves the diverse possibility of the cold wax so much so that this has become her favourite medium.

Anna finds inspiration in all sorts of places – evening walks around the coast, the kanuka trees weathered and resilient, a poem, a crumpled piece of discarded packing, a mood…the possibilities are endless. She has an experimental approach to art making – ‘what will happen if…?’. Anna holds a BA in Philosophy from Massey University and Advanced Diploma in Art and Creativity from TLC Wellington.
