“The Walk Home” by artist Lotte Hawley was commissioned to work on the large Riddiford Street building. The project was a collaborative process between the building owner, artist, and an enthusiastic committee with fine-tuning the concept drawings.
Lotte nailed the brief perfectly which included a unique South Taranaki – specific content. It was important to portray relatable content, a timeless memory, and a type of storytelling. With this mural, we need no interpretation, a boy wearing an iconic swani walks home from school with his backpack enjoying an Anderson’s pie. He walks past paddocks with haystacks and a rural fence.
This mural was commissioned by Bizlink Hāwera, who also commissioned 'A Secret World' by the same artist and is featured in the town square.
