Nau mai ki Te Puni Tiaki Taonga o Whanganui
Welcome to the Whanganui Regional Museum
The museum is just a day trip away from New Plymouth or Wellington. Located in Pukenamu Queen’s Park in the cultural heart of this beautiful and vibrant river city, the museum holds a precious and internationally renowned Taonga Māori Collection.
You will see the exceptional creations of tūpuna of Whanganui tangata whenua, and an illuminating collection of natural and human history as well as historically and scientifically significant specimens across a range of birds and reptiles.
The museum’s Lindauer Gallery features a stunning collection of Gottfried Lindauer paintings, and a regular display of compelling new acquisitions is where you can view anything from a delicately crafted bouquet fashioned out of human hair to a Prussian bugle.
The Outfit of the Month display is not to be missed, and the exhibition Teeth, Talons and Taxidermy is a vivid spectacle which showcases animals from all over the world and runs until June 2022.
The museum also hosts a dynamic range of public and education programmes. With a stunning range of gifts, jewellery, books and cards from Whanganui and New Zealand makers, the museum shop is also a must see.
